Blind Flange Guide: Selection, Loads, and Inspection

Overview

A blind flange is a solid bolted closure used to terminate a flanged pipe, valve, vessel nozzle, or equipment connection. It has no central flow bore. The blind flange, gasket, and bolting form a removable pressure boundary that can be opened for inspection, cleaning, modification, or future expansion.

Selection requires the same standard, nominal size, class or PN, facing, material group, gasket system, and bolting basis as the mating connection. A blind flange should not be confused with a line blank or spectacle blind installed between two flanges.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components

Internal pressure acts over the closed area and creates an axial separating force. The blind flange must have the correct thickness and material for the applicable standard and rating. Larger sizes can be very heavy and need a lifting plan.

The closure can also experience nozzle loads, thermal expansion, vacuum, cycling, and test pressure. A standard blind flange does not automatically validate an attached lifting lug, drain, tapped hole, or custom opening. Modifications require engineering approval.

During hydrostatic or pneumatic testing, a temporary blind can become a critical test boundary. The test plan should address rating, gasket, bolting, venting, exclusion zones, and depressurization.

Methods, Parameters, or Process

Specify and verify a blind flange using the following parameters.

ParameterSelection questionInspection point
Standard and editionWhich flange system applies?Dimensions, tolerances, marking, ratings
Size and class/PNWhat connection is being closed?OD, thickness, drilling, pressure basis
FacingWhat gasket system is used?RF, FF, RTJ, finish, groove, damage
MaterialWhat temperature, corrosion, and toughness apply?Certificate, heat number, tests, PMI
Bolting and gasketWhat complete joint is required?Quantity, diameter, length, materials
HandlingHow will it be lifted and restrained?Weight, plan, lifting points, access
ModificationAre drains, vents, taps, or lugs added?Approved design, machining, NDE

Supplier and Inspection Checklist

  • Match the mating standard, size, class, facing, and series.
  • Confirm pressure-temperature suitability using the correct basis.
  • Inspect thickness, OD, holes, bolt circle, facing, and edges.
  • Verify certificate and heat-number traceability.
  • Check gasket and bolting compatibility with fluid and temperature.
  • Confirm actual stud length.
  • Review weight and lifting method before installation.
  • Do not drill, tap, weld, or machine without engineering approval.
  • Protect raised faces and ring grooves.
  • Use a controlled flange-joint assembly procedure.

Application to Pipe Fittings, Valves, and Flanges

Blind flanges are used at line ends, nozzles, future branches, test boundaries, and maintenance points. They provide access but require space to withdraw studs and handle the flange.

A spectacle blind, spacer, or paddle blind serves a different operational isolation function between mating flanges. These should not be substituted merely because both block flow.

For valves, a blind flange can protect an unused end or close one side during testing. The user must verify pressure direction and body loads.

FAQ

Is it the same as a spectacle blind?

No. A blind flange closes one opening; a spectacle blind or paddle blank is installed between two flanges.

Can it be used for pressure testing?

Yes only when rating, material, gasket, bolting, and the test arrangement are approved.

Why are large blind flanges thick?

They resist pressure-induced bending over a solid closed area.

Can a vent hole be added?

Only with engineering approval because it changes the pressure boundary.

What belongs in the RFQ?

Standard, size, class/PN, facing, material, quantity, coating, documents, tests, gasket, bolting, and approved custom features.

Next Steps

Provide mating flange details and service conditions. For large or modified blind flanges, request a drawing, weight, lifting plan, traceability, and inspection records.
