How to Verify Flange Size Before Ordering or Installation

Overview

To know whether a flange size is correct, identify the governing standard and compare several dimensions together: nominal size, pressure class or PN, outside diameter, thickness, bolt-hole count, bolt-hole diameter, bolt-circle diameter, bore, facing, and hub geometry. One measurement is not enough because different classes and standards can share a similar outside diameter.

The nominal size marked on the flange is a designation, not always a direct physical measurement. A DN80 or NPS 3 flange, for example, must be checked against the selected standard and class rather than against a tape-measured bore alone.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components

A flange with the wrong drilling cannot be corrected safely by forcing bolts, enlarging holes, or rotating the pipe under load. The wrong bore can create an internal step, restrict flow, or produce an unacceptable weld transition. A facing mismatch can prevent the gasket from seating correctly.

Field identification is harder after coating, corrosion, machining, or removal of markings. The inspection should therefore combine dimensional evidence with material traceability, service records, and drawings.

Size verification is also a supplier-control issue. A dimensional report should reference the exact standard table and edition used, not simply state “OK.”

Methods, Parameters, or Process

Measure the flange in a controlled sequence and compare the results with an approved drawing or licensed standard table.

Supplier and Inspection Checklist

  • Clean the flange sufficiently to expose edges, holes, facing, and markings.
  • Record all markings before grinding or coating removal.
  • Use calibrated calipers, tape, bore gauges, and thickness tools appropriate to the size.
  • Measure more than one hole and thickness location when damage or distortion is possible.
  • Confirm NPS or DN, class or PN, standard, type, and facing as one set.
  • Check both mating flanges, not only one side of the joint.
  • Verify bore compatibility with the connected pipe or valve.
  • Do not modify drilling or facing without engineering approval.
  • Photograph the measurement setup for disputed or replacement items.

Application to Pipe Fittings, Valves, and Flanges

Weld-neck flanges require bore and bevel checks in addition to the drilling pattern. Slip-on flanges require pipe-OD and bore-clearance checks. Blind flanges have no flow bore, so identification relies more heavily on OD, thickness, drilling, facing, and markings.

Valve and equipment flanges may match a standard drilling system while using body-specific thickness or geometry. Use the valve or nozzle drawing when standard companion-flange dimensions do not describe the complete joint.

FAQ

Can flange size be identified from outside diameter alone?

No. Use OD together with bolt pattern, thickness, facing, bore, class, and standard.

Is DN80 always identical to NPS 3?

They are commonly corresponding nominal designations, but the actual flange dimensions still depend on the selected standard and rating.

How do I measure the bolt circle?

Use centers of opposite holes or a controlled calculation from adjacent-hole spacing. The chosen method should suit the hole count and available access.

What if the markings are missing?

Combine dimensional measurement, material testing when required, system records, and engineering review. Do not guess the rating.

Can incorrect holes be enlarged?

Only under an approved engineered repair or modification procedure. Uncontrolled slotting or drilling can invalidate the joint.

Next Steps

For replacement flanges, send the supplier a dimensional sketch, photographs, mating-component details, material requirement, and service data. Ask for a drawing approval before production.
