Overview
Flange standards define controlled systems for dimensions, ratings, tolerances, marking, materials, and testing within a stated scope. The purchase order must identify the exact standard and contract edition. “ANSI flange” by itself is usually incomplete because current product standards are commonly published under organizations such as ASME.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components
Two flanges with the same nominal size may not be interchangeable if they use different standards, pressure designations, drillings, facings, or dimensions. Material specifications also do not replace dimensional standards. For example, a material grade can describe the forging material while the flange standard controls geometry and rating information.
The piping design code, line class, equipment specification, and local regulatory requirements decide which standard system applies.
Methods, Parameters, or Process
Use a document hierarchy.
| Document type | Main purpose |
|---|---|
| Piping design code | Overall design, fabrication, examination, testing, and service rules |
| Flange dimensional standard | Dimensions, ratings, tolerances, marking, and related product requirements |
| Material specification | Chemical, mechanical, heat-treatment, and product-form requirements |
| Gasket standard | Gasket dimensions, materials, and marking within scope |
| Project specification | Additional tests, approved materials, coating, documentation, and deviations |
| Approved drawing | Special dimensions, orientation, machining, and interfaces |
Important ASME examples include:
- ASME B16.5 for pipe flanges and flanged fittings from NPS 1/2 through NPS 24.
- ASME B16.47 for large-diameter steel flanges from NPS 26 through NPS 60.
- ASME B16.36 for orifice flanges within its stated scope.
- ASME B16.48 for operational line blanks within its stated scope.
- ASME B16.20 for specified metallic gasket types.
- ASME B16.21 for nonmetallic flat gaskets.
- ASME B16.1 for gray iron pipe flanges and flanged fittings within its scope.
EN, DIN, ISO, API, MSS, and customer standards may apply to other projects. Do not claim interchangeability without a dimensional and engineering comparison.
Verification note: standards are revised. Confirm the edition listed in the contract and purchase licensed copies for design and inspection.
Supplier and Inspection Checklist
- Record the complete standard designation and edition.
- Confirm the standard scope covers the size, type, material, and rating.
- Separate dimensional requirements from material requirements.
- Check project additions such as impact testing, PMI, NDE, hardness, corrosion tests, or certification.
- Confirm units and designation system.
- Review mating equipment standards.
- List all supplier deviations.
- Use controlled copies for design and inspection.
Application to Pipe Fittings, Valves, and Flanges
Standards affect flanges on pipe fittings, valves, pumps, compressors, tanks, heat exchangers, and packaged equipment. A plant may use one flange system for process piping and another on imported equipment.
The interface should be resolved during design. Adapters, transition spools, or custom flanges may be required, but they must be engineered and documented.
FAQ
Is ANSI the same as ASME?
No. ANSI accredits standards-development processes, while ASME publishes many current B16 product standards. A purchase order should name the actual standard designation.
Does ASTM A105 define flange dimensions?
ASTM A105/A105M is a material specification for carbon steel forgings for piping applications. The flange dimensions come from the stated dimensional standard or purchaser drawing.
Can EN and ASME flanges be connected if the nominal size matches?
Not without checking drilling, dimensions, rating basis, facing, gasket, and joint design.
Which standard edition should a supplier use?
Use the edition required by the contract. The latest published edition is not automatically the contractual edition.
Next Steps
Create a standards matrix for each line class: design code, flange standard, material specification, gasket standard, bolting specification, and project supplements. Send that matrix with every critical inquiry.
