Why It Matters for Pipe Components

Thickness affects flange stiffness, bolting behavior, pressure capacity, machining allowance, weight, and compatibility with the mating joint. A flange that appears heavy enough may still be wrong if the drilling, facing, hub, or material does not match the required standard.

Blind flanges deserve particular attention because the solid plate carries pressure loading across the opening. Pipe fittings, valves, and equipment nozzles may also have integral flange dimensions that must be checked against their own product standard or drawing.

For large-diameter flanges, thickness affects handling and weight estimation. For lined or clad flanges, separate the pressure-retaining base thickness from the corrosion-resistant layer. For custom anchor, nozzle, or plate flanges, use the approved design rather than a general pipe-flange chart.
