Long Weld Neck Flange: Nozzle Geometry and Inspection

Overview

A long weld neck flange has an extended neck that can form part of a vessel, tank, or equipment nozzle. Unlike a standard weld neck flange used at a pipe joint, its neck length, bore, outside profile, and transition may be defined by an equipment drawing.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components

The extended neck transfers loads between the flange and equipment shell or adjoining component. Pressure, external nozzle loads, thermal expansion, fatigue, corrosion allowance, and fabrication sequence can influence the design.

A trade name is not enough for purchase. The supplier needs a controlled drawing and a clear responsibility for design verification.

Methods, Parameters, or Process

Define the component through the equipment datasheet and drawing.

ParameterRequired information
Flange endStandard, size, class or PN, and facing
NeckLength, OD profile, bore, taper, radii, and weld end
MaterialFull specification, grade, heat treatment, and toughness
LoadsPressure and external nozzle loads when design is in supplier scope
Corrosion allowanceApplied surfaces and final dimensions
Manufacturing routeForged, rolled, or approved alternative
NDEUT, MT/PT, and any supplementary examination
DocumentationCalculation responsibility, drawing, MTR, NDE, and dimensional report

Confirm whether the flange dimensions are standard while the neck is custom, or whether the entire component is project-specific. Identify all machining allowances and final weld-end dimensions.

Verification note: every custom dimension and load must be checked against the approved equipment design and contract-required code.

Supplier and Inspection Checklist

  • Verify drawing revision and design responsibility.
  • Check raw-material heat traceability.
  • Inspect forging shape and heat-treatment records.
  • Perform specified UT and surface examination.
  • Measure facing, flange drilling, neck length, bore, taper, radii, and weld end.
  • Check straightness and concentricity.
  • Confirm corrosion allowance and cladding details.
  • Protect the long neck against bending during shipment.

Application to Pipe Fittings, Valves, and Flanges

Long weld neck flanges are used on pressure vessels, tanks, columns, heat exchangers, and special nozzles. They can reduce the need for a separate nozzle neck and flange weld, depending on the approved design.

The equipment fabricator should coordinate shell opening, nozzle projection, reinforcement, and final flange orientation.

FAQ

Is a long weld neck flange standardized?

The flange end may follow a standard, while the extended neck is often project-specific. Confirm the drawing and standard scope.

Can it be ordered by NPS and class only?

Usually not when neck geometry matters. Length, bore, profile, material, and weld end should be stated.

Who checks nozzle loads?

The purchase documents must assign responsibility between the equipment designer, purchaser, and flange supplier.

What is the main shipping risk?

The long neck can be bent or the face damaged if the component is not supported correctly.

Next Steps

Issue the approved nozzle drawing, equipment datasheet, design conditions, loads, material specification, NDE requirements, and document schedule with the RFQ.
