Overview
Steel plate flanges are cut and machined from plate or made through a qualified fabricated route. They can be appropriate for selected blind, flat, backing, low-pressure, large-diameter, or drawing-based flanges when the product standard and project permit plate material. They are not an automatic substitute for forged weld-neck or socket-weld flanges.
The order should identify the plate specification, thickness, heat treatment, through-thickness quality if required, manufacturing route, welding, machining, tests, and marking.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components
Plate can contain laminations or directional properties that require attention around bolt holes, hubs, welds, and highly loaded regions. Thermal cutting can create a heat-affected edge that must be removed or conditioned according to the manufacturing procedure.
A flange machined from plate may look identical to a forging after coating. Material certificates and markings must therefore remain traceable to the actual product form.
Project rules may prohibit plate for certain flange types or services. The supplier should not choose the route only to reduce cost.
Methods, Parameters, or Process
Confirm route suitability before reviewing dimensions or price.
| Manufacturing step | Required control | Inspection concern |
|---|---|---|
| Plate procurement | Grade, thickness, heat, condition | Certificate and identification |
| Cutting | Method, allowance, edge conditioning | Heat-affected zone, cracks, roughness |
| Forming/welding | Qualified procedure where used | Seams, distortion, residual stress |
| Heat treatment | Specification or project requirement | Furnace records and properties |
| Machining | Datums, facing, drilling, bore | Dimensions and surface finish |
| NDE and release | UT, MT/PT, dimensions as ordered | Laminations, edges, repaired areas |
Supplier and Inspection Checklist
- Verify that the flange type and service permit a plate route.
- State the exact plate material specification and condition.
- Review lamination or through-thickness requirements.
- Approve welding and heat-treatment procedures when fabrication is involved.
- Check thermal-cut edges before final machining.
- Maintain heat traceability after nesting and cutting.
- Measure flatness, thickness, facing, drilling, and bore.
- Document any repairs and obtain approval where required.
- Do not mark a drawing-based plate flange as a standard forging.
Application to Pipe Fittings, Valves, and Flanges
Plate flanges are used as backing rings, certain blind or flat flanges, duct and water-system flanges, equipment connections, and custom large-diameter components. The design and applicable product standard determine where the route is acceptable.
For corrosive service, plate surface condition, cladding, weld overlay, coating, and edge protection may be as important as base-material strength.
FAQ
Are plate flanges weaker than forged flanges?
Not as a universal statement. Suitability depends on design, product form, material properties, orientation, defects, and the applicable standard.
Can a weld-neck flange be cut from plate?
Do not assume so. Hubbed pressure flanges often require an approved forging or another specifically qualified route.
Why is ultrasonic testing requested?
UT can help detect laminations in plate when the project requires that control.
Can plate flanges follow ASME B16.5 dimensions?
Some flange types and provisions may allow plate material, but dimensional similarity alone does not establish compliance.
What should the certificate identify?
Plate specification, heat number, thickness, condition, chemistry, mechanical tests, and linkage to the finished flange.
Next Steps
Ask the supplier to declare the proposed product form and route. Review plate grade, cutting, welding, heat treatment, NDE, machining, and marking before approving substitution.
