Weld Neck Forged Steel Flanges: Sizes, Bores, and Inspection

Overview

A weld neck forged steel flange has a tapered hub and butt-weld end produced from an approved forged material. The flange size is defined by nominal pipe size or DN, pressure class or PN, flange standard, facing, and bore. The pipe schedule or stated bore is especially important because it controls the internal transition at the weld.

A “weldable flange” can also describe slip-on, socket-weld, plate, or special flanges. Use weld neck forged steel flange when that specific construction is required.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components

The forged route provides controlled grain flow and material properties when produced and heat treated correctly. It does not remove the need to verify chemistry, mechanical properties, NDE, dimensions, and traceability.

Size selection is more than choosing NPS. The same nominal size is available in several classes and bores. An incorrect bore can create an internal mismatch that affects welding, flow, erosion, and examination.

Hub dimensions, flange thickness, drilling, facing, and bevel should be checked against the required standard edition. Custom machining must be approved and documented.

Methods, Parameters, or Process

Specify the flange from the joint inward: mating face, bolting, flange body, hub, bore, and pipe weld end.

Supplier and Inspection Checklist

  • State the flange standard and edition required by contract.
  • Specify nominal size, class, facing, and bore.
  • Provide connected pipe OD and wall.
  • Check hub length, transition, flange thickness, and drilling.
  • Inspect bevel angle, root face, bore, and damage.
  • Verify forging heat number and certificate linkage.
  • Review heat treatment and mechanical test results.
  • Require PMI or impact testing only when justified by the project.
  • Protect faces and bevels during packing.

Application to Pipe Fittings, Valves, and Flanges

Forged weld-neck flanges are used in process piping, power piping, pipelines, pressure equipment, and valve connections where the design calls for a butt-welded hub. Large sizes may fall under a different flange standard from smaller sizes.

For low-temperature, sour, hydrogen, or corrosive service, material grade and supplementary requirements need engineering review. The words forged steel do not define a complete material specification.

FAQ

How are weld neck flange sizes selected?

Use nominal size, class or PN, standard, facing, and bore or pipe schedule together.

Why is the bore important?

It should provide an acceptable transition to the connected pipe wall and weld end.

Is every weld neck flange forged?

Many standard steel weld-neck flanges are forged, but the order should state the material and manufacturing specification.

Can the bore be machined after delivery?

Only under an approved modification that preserves required dimensions, material integrity, and documentation.

Does forged steel mean carbon steel?

Not necessarily. Forged steel can include carbon, low-alloy, stainless, and nickel-base materials.

Next Steps

Provide a flange datasheet with connected pipe OD and wall, bore, bevel, class, facing, material, testing, and certificate requirements.
