Overview

ASTM A335/A335M is a material specification for seamless ferritic alloy-steel pipe intended for high-temperature service. It covers nominal-wall and minimum-wall pipe and requires the material to be suitable for bending, flanging, similar forming operations, and fusion welding. Grade selection depends on design temperature, pressure, creep strength, corrosion environment, welding procedure, heat treatment, and the governing construction code.

Commonly encountered grades include P5, P9, P11, P22, P91, and P92, but the purchase order must use a grade listed in the specified edition of ASTM A335/A335M. The standard controls chemistry, mechanical properties, heat treatment, testing, examination, dimensions by referenced requirements, and product marking.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components

High-temperature alloy pipe is used in power generation, refineries, petrochemical plants, boilers, steam systems, and elevated-temperature process services. Small differences in chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, niobium, nitrogen, and heat treatment can significantly affect high-temperature strength and weldability.

Material mix-up is a serious risk because several alloy grades look identical. Positive material identification, heat-number traceability, correct filler metal, controlled preheat, postweld heat treatment, and hardness control may all be required by the project.

Application to Pipe Fittings, Valves, and Flanges

ASTM A335 pipe is commonly joined to alloy steel elbows, tees, reducers, weld neck flanges, and butt weld valves. The adjoining components must have compatible chemistry, strength, pressure-temperature rating, heat treatment, and weldability.

For induction bends, the starting pipe grade and bend procedure must maintain required properties after local heating. For flanges, a compatible forged alloy specification and grade should be selected under the piping class. For fittings, the purchaser should specify the applicable ASTM A234/A234M grade rather than marking the fitting simply “A335.”

Is A335 P91 the same as A234 WP91?
