Overview

A backing ring for pipe flanges is a loose bolting component used behind a stub end, flared pipe end, or compatible collar. The fluid contacts the stub end or liner, while the backing ring supplies the bolt circle and transfers the assembly load. This arrangement is often called a loose flange, backing flange, or lap-joint-style connection, although terminology varies by standard and industry.

Backing rings are useful where bolt-hole alignment is important or where the wetted component is made from an expensive corrosion-resistant material. The loose ring can rotate during assembly, and it may be made from a less expensive material if corrosion, temperature, strength, and project requirements permit.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components

They may connect these systems to valves, pumps, tanks, or standard flanges. The mating flange face and gasket must be compatible with the stub-end lap rather than selected from the backing ring alone.

In a piping spool, the rotating ring simplifies bolt-hole alignment. This benefit is valuable around valves and equipment nozzles, but it does not compensate for poor pipe alignment or excessive external load.

Is a backing ring the same as a lap joint flange?

The terms are related but not always identical. A lap joint flange is a standardized loose flange used with a stub end. “Backing ring” is broader and may refer to rings used with collars, flared ends, plastic adapters, or other systems.
