BSPP vs BSPT vs NPT Threads: Differences and Compatibility

Overview

BSPP, BSPT, and NPT are different pipe-thread systems and should not be treated as interchangeable. BSPP uses parallel threads and normally seals with a gasket, O-ring, bonded seal, or metal seating surface outside the threads. BSPT uses tapered threads intended to create a pressure-tight joint on the threads, normally with a suitable sealant. NPT is also tapered but uses a different thread form and dimensional system.

BSPP is commonly associated with the “G” designation under ISO 228-1. BSPT pressure-tight threads are commonly designated with “R” for an external taper and “Rc” for an internal taper under ISO 7-1. NPT dimensions and gaging are covered by ASME B1.20.1.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components

A fitting may appear to start threading into another component even when the systems do not match. Partial engagement can mislead installers, but thread angle, pitch, crest and root form, taper, and diameter relationships are different. Forced assembly can damage threads, reduce engagement, crack a port, or create a leak path.

The sealing method is equally important. BSPP threads provide mechanical retention but are not intended to make a pressure-tight joint on the thread flanks. BSPT and NPT joints rely on controlled interference and usually require an approved sealant. Confusing these functions is a common cause of leakage in valves, instruments, hydraulic fittings, manifolds, and adapters.

Identification should follow a controlled process:

1. Read the marking or drawing designation. 2. Determine whether the thread is parallel or tapered. 3. Measure threads per inch or pitch with a thread gauge. 4. Check major diameter with the correct reference method. 5. Compare the profile and dimensions with the applicable standard. 6. Use calibrated plug or ring gauges for production acceptance.

Visual appearance alone is not reliable. Several nominal sizes have similar pitches across systems, but similar is not identical.

Supplier and Inspection Checklist

  • State the exact thread standard and designation on the RFQ.
  • Define male and female thread forms separately.
  • Confirm nominal size and pitch.
  • Specify whether a gasket, O-ring, bonded seal, or thread sealant is used.
  • Identify fluid, pressure, temperature, and seal-material compatibility.
  • Require calibrated thread gauges appropriate to the standard.
  • Check effective engagement and shoulder or sealing-face dimensions.
  • Protect threads with clean caps or plugs.
  • Inspect for burrs, torn threads, plating buildup, dents, and contamination.
  • Confirm coating thickness has been considered in gaging.
  • Do not approve adapters based only on hand fit.
  • Mark mixed-thread products clearly to prevent installation errors.

Application to Pipe Fittings, Valves, and Flanges

BSPP, BSPT, and NPT are common on threaded elbows, tees, couplings, unions, plugs, instrument valves, drain connections, pressure gauges, and hydraulic adapters. Flanged valves may also contain threaded drain, vent, grease, or instrument ports that use a different standard from the main flange connection.

Adapters can connect different systems only when each end is manufactured and sealed according to its own standard. An adapter does not make a BSPP male thread safely equivalent to an NPT female port.

FAQ

Can BSPT and NPT be connected because both are tapered?

No. They use different thread angles and dimensional relationships. A partial hand fit does not prove compatibility or pressure integrity.

Does BSPP need thread tape?

BSPP normally seals at a washer, O-ring, bonded seal, cone, or other external face. Tape on the parallel thread does not replace the designed sealing element.

What do G, R, and Rc mean?

“G” commonly identifies parallel fastening pipe threads under ISO 228-1. “R” identifies an external taper thread and “Rc” an internal taper thread for pressure-tight joints under ISO 7-1.

How can a supplier prove the thread is correct?

The supplier should provide the specified designation, dimensional inspection, and acceptance using calibrated gauges made for that thread standard.
