BSPP vs BSPT Threads: Parallel and Tapered BSP Connections

Overview

BSPP and BSPT share a 55-degree Whitworth thread form, but they serve different sealing functions. BSPP threads are parallel and are commonly designated “G” under ISO 228-1. BSPT pressure-tight threads are tapered and are commonly designated “R” for external taper threads and “Rc” for internal taper threads under ISO 7-1.

BSPP normally seals at a face, washer, O-ring, bonded seal, or cone. BSPT normally seals through controlled thread interference with an approved sealant. Because the sealing design is different, the correct port, male end, sealing element, and engagement length must be identified before purchase.

Why It Matters for Pipe Components

Using the wrong BSP form may allow assembly but still cause leakage. A parallel male thread installed into a tapered port may have insufficient or unpredictable engagement. A tapered male thread installed into a parallel port may bind locally without creating the intended pressure-tight geometry.

The risk increases in stainless steel because galling can make an incorrect assembly appear tight. Over-torquing may crack thin ports or distort valve bodies. In hydraulic and instrument systems, even a small leak can affect cleanliness, pressure stability, safety, and maintenance cost.

Correct identification requires more than checking pitch. The inspector should determine whether the diameter changes along the thread length. A taper gauge, micrometer method, or correct standard gauge can be used. Application to Pipe Fittings, Valves, and Flanges

BSPP is common on hydraulic ports, gauge connections, hose fittings, and equipment connections using bonded seals or O-rings. BSPT is common on threaded pipe fittings, valve ports, and pressure connections designed to seal on the threads.

Flanged valves and manifolds may use BSP ports for drain, vent, test, or lubrication connections. These small connections must still match the project thread standard even though the main line connection is flanged or butt welded.

FAQ

Is BSP the same as BSPP?

“BSP” is an incomplete description. It may refer to the broader British Standard Pipe family. The drawing should state BSPP/G or BSPT/R/Rc.

Can an R male thread connect to a G female thread?

Some standards and product systems permit specific R-to-G combinations under controlled conditions, but compatibility must be confirmed from the governing standard and manufacturer design. Do not assume any tapered male and parallel female pair will seal safely.

Why does BSPP need a washer or O-ring?

The parallel threads provide retention but do not create a pressure-tight seal on the thread flanks. The gasket or sealing face provides the fluid barrier.

Is thread tape enough to seal BSPT?

The approved sealant depends on fluid, pressure, temperature, material, cleanliness, and project rules. Tape is not universally suitable.
