Overview
BSPP and NPT are not interchangeable pipe threads. BSPP is a parallel 55-degree Whitworth-form thread, commonly designated “G” under ISO 228-1. NPT is a tapered 60-degree pipe thread whose dimensions and gaging are covered by ASME B1.20.1.
BSPP normally seals with a washer, O-ring, bonded seal, cone, or other seating feature outside the threads. NPT normally seals through tapered thread interference with a compatible sealant. A fitting may begin to engage across the two systems, but pitch, diameter, profile, and sealing principle are not the same.
Why It Matters for Pipe Components
Cross-thread assembly can damage ports, create limited engagement, and produce a leak that appears only after pressure or thermal cycling. The risk is common on imported machinery, instruments, pumps, valves, and hydraulic components where BSPP and NPT products may be used in the same facility.
BSPP and NPT also require different inspection tools. A thread pitch gauge alone cannot prove conformity. The supplier must verify thread form, diameter, taper, engagement, and the external sealing feature where applicable.

Identification process:

BSPP connections are widely used on hydraulic equipment and imported machinery. NPT is common in North American piping, instrumentation, and valve accessories. Thread adapters may be installed on pressure gauges, drain and vent ports, hose connections, grease lines, and sample points.
A flanged or butt-weld valve may still contain NPT or BSPP auxiliary ports. Procurement teams should review every connection on the valve data sheet rather than focusing only on the main end connection.

Can BSPP and NPT be connected with extra thread tape?
No. Sealant cannot correct different thread angles, taper, and dimensions. Use a purpose-designed adapter.
Why do BSPP and NPT sometimes seem to fit?
Certain nominal sizes have similar pitch and diameter, allowing limited engagement. This apparent fit is not proof of safe or pressure-tight compatibility.
Which thread is better for repeated assembly?
